Root Circling is Not the Problem with Plastic Pots – Kevin Jodrey from Wonderland Nursery
When reading about fabric pots, you may find that the biggest problem they solve is root circling. It is still a problem, but Kevin Jodrey from Wonderland Nursery has a theory that it is not the main reason to use fabric pots.
So what’s the theory?
Kevin Jodrey:
From someone who has been running nurseries for a long time, it’s my own theory that it isn’t circling that’s the problem. It’s something to do with the exudates. The plant’s oozing out these sugars and it’s oozing out these waste products from its roots. For whatever reason, when it stays in plastic too long, the root quality seems to deteriorate. The plant just seems to have a little bit of a slowdown. I can pull it out and we can say that it’s bound or it’s circled, but the truth is that it takes a tree 18 months to know the difference between pot and fabric. So, unless you’ve got a tree for 18 months, it doesn’t know the difference. So, to me, it’s not about root circling. It’s about the aeration component of the fabric bag that allows this plant to let the waste products out of the root systems. So, if I can leave myself 3 to 4 inches of space on top where every 3 weeks I can add worm castings, some Bu’s blend, some bokashi, some Grean Bicycle, charge it with some synergy, then I have myself a root system that’s organically boosted that’s going to live forever.
So, according to Kevin, the breathability of the fabric is far more important than the fact that roots won’t circle in a fabric pot. Roots will be able to discard their waste and oxygen will be able to permeate the soil.

Whoops! We spelled it wrong. Grean Bicycles is an agricultural and tech company, and they put out products like tea mixes or flower mixes. Looks like their website is currently being worked on, but here’s a link to their Facebook page.
